This tour takes you into the lush, tropical region of Mexico - a region that produces fruits such as papaya, mango, banana, coconut, pineapple, guava, citrus and other tropical vegetation. The ruins of El Tajin are probably the most extensive pre-Columbian ruins in Mexico. The predominant building is known as the Pyramid of 365 Niches. It is believed that the ball game may have originated here, since some 23 ball courts have been discovered on this site. The Voladores, sometimes called The Flying Indians, originated here and the religious dance is still performed atop a pole extending some 100 feet into the air.
DAY 1 - Over the border and on to San Fernando before taking the short cut through Soto La Marina. Fields of cartamo, beans, chiles and onions line our way. Soon you realize we are headed for the tropics as coconut palms appear. Overnight at the Mansion Real in Tampico.
DAY 2 - Today our excursion takes us to El Tajin, the splendid archeological site that includes the Pyramid of the Niches. Built around 600AD and abandoned around 1200 A.D., theses ruins are the most extensive found in the Americas. Time permitting, visit Papantla, the vanilla capital, where you can purchase vanilla beans to sweeten the sugar jar. Overnight at the Manision Real in Tampico. CB, L
DAY 3 - Enjoy Tampico and its immediate surroundings. Included tour of the harbor, the Customs House, the Tampico Market. Take a boat cruise on a beautiful lake.l birds. Also visit Playa Miramar (beach near Tampico)plus a museum. Overnight at the Mansion Real in Tampico. CB
DAY 4 - Journey to Cd. Victoria. Visit the local market selling every kind of fruit and vegetable imaginable. Visit the Guadalupe Church where you have a panoramic view of the entire city. After lunch, turn toward home by passing San Fernando and into the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. CB
