EL TAJIN Tour

Probably the most extensive ruin in Mexico still being explored and restored. The predominant building is known as the Pyramid of 365 Niches. Archeologists only suppose the meaning of the niches. It is believed that the ball game may have originated here, since some 23 ball courts have been discovered on this site. The Voladores, sometimes called The Flying Indians, originated here and the religious dance is still performed atop a pole extending some 100 feet into the air. Explore this site at a leisurely pace as Go...With Jo! allows plenty of time to admire, and speculate over these ancient ruins.

DAY 1 - Over the border at Reynosa and south to San Fernando before taking the short cut through Soto La Marina Fields of cartamo, beans, chiles and onions line our way. Soon you realize we are headed for the tropics as coconut palms appear. Visit the beach before arriving into the bustling downtown area where it seems that the entire world must meet on the nearby main plaza. Overnight at the Hotel Inglaterra in Tampico.

DAY 2 - Your guide will acquaint you with the city exploring the recently remodeled Plaza de Armas. Walk down to the Plaza de la Libertad to admire the reconstructed square with lacy wrought iron balconies reminding one of New Orleans. After lunch, cross the Panuco River into the state of Veracruz. Those who wish may cross over on the Water Taxis, transportation used by the locals. Plants that grow as pot plants at home, reach the eaves of the houses. Now you know you are in the tropics! Arrive at Poza Rica, meaning “rich well”. A tropical paradise surrounds your hotel. Overnight at the Poza Rica Inn in Poza Rica. B, D

DAY 3 - Visit El Tajin, the Pyramid of 365 niches. Built around 600 AD and abandoned around 1200 A.D., these ruins are the most extensive that have been found in the Americas. Heavily carved panels depict the ball game where they say the winners lost their lives. Today the Flying Indians perform an age old ritual dance as they swing around a pole extending thirty meters in the air. In Papantla, the vanilla capital, you can purchase vanilla beans to sweeten the sugar jar. Travel through the charming little town of Tuxpan, on your way to Tampico. Overnight at the Hotel Inglaterra in Tampico. B

DAY 4 - Journey to Cd. Victoria, the capital of our neighboring state of Tamaulipas. Visit the local market whose wide aisles, lined with every kind of fruit and vegetable imaginable, present a kaleidoscope of color. Visit the Guadalupe Church where you have a panoramic view of the entire city. After lunch, turn toward home by passing San Fernando and into the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. B
