Parras Tour... An Oasis in the Desert!

What a treat to find this hide away nestled in a beautiful valley among the rolling foothills of the Sierra Madres. In the middle of the desert in the state of Coahuila, water springs - called estanques - create a beautiful place where a bountiful harvest of pecan and fig orchards, corn fields and the oldest vineyard in the Americas invite you to an enjoyable three day vacation. Temples and historical buildings recall more than four hundred years of history. The tranquility is broken only by the awakening of the birds as they greet the dawn.

DAY 1 - Depart the Rio Grande Valley for your drive West toward Monterrey and on to Saltillo, once the capital of Texas. By mid afternoon, arrive into Parras and settle into your hotel. Explore the grounds. Golfers can arrange to play golf the following day. Overnight at the Rincon del Montero in Parras. CB

DAY 2 - After breakfast, it is time to explore Santa Maria de las Parras, the name assigned in 1597, the year of it’s foundation. Now known as Parras de la Fuente, the town is crowned by the church of Santo Madero, that tops a nearby hillside. Returning from our visit to this church, we continue to explore as we satisfy our sweet tooth with the famous candies from Parras - they will melt in your mouth. Of course, we must visit the Casa Madero winery and the Wine Museum. Vineyards, home made candies and the production of textiles have continued over the years to be the main industries of this town. Tonight, enjoy an included Fiesta with dinner with entertainment. Overnight at the Rincon del Montero in Parras. D

DAY 3 - On our way home, visit Saltillo, well known for the colorful sarapes that have been woven here for years. Visit the sarape shop, the Santiago Cathedral where you see a magnificent silver altar that was on exhibit throughout the United States and the Bird Museum with the world’s largest display of birds native to Mexico. No visit to this part of the world would be complete without a stop at the bakery to buy Pan de Pulque, a bread leavened with pulque, an alcoholic drink produced from cactus. Arrive back at the border around 6:30pm.
