San Miguel de Allende Tour... The Mexican Hill Town

Tour San Miguel de Allende! Known as the Mexican Hill Town, San Miguel is so picturesque and the climate so divine that it has become an artists' and retirees' mecca. The magnificent Gothic style pink cantera stone Cathedral, landmark of San Miguel, is the focal point of the downtown area and our hotel is right across the jardin (Called the plaza in most Mexican towns. The locals call their plaza “el jardin”or the garden.). At every turn the many flower filled patios, the quaint shops and bubbling fountains will delight you. The historic center in the downtown area has kept the facades of the buildings just as they were in Colonial times. Pack your walking shoes for exploring the many cobblestone streets and do bring plenty of film. The tour includes Guanajuato, the sub-terrenean city, as well as Dolores Hidalgo and Queretaro.

DAY 1 - Your journey begins as our chartered motor coach crosses into Mexico traveling through farm and ranch land on our way to San Luis Potosi. Our routing takes us through Cuidad Victoria and over a recently completed highway shortening our travel time considerably as we travel onto the high plains of the state of San Luis Potosi and into the city of the same name. Overnight at the Hotel Real Plaza in San Luis Potosi.

DAY 2 - After breakfast, we continue to Dolores Hidalgo, where we visit Father Hidalgo’s church and the tile shops surrounding the square. Enjoy an ice cream on Jo before visiting a tile and pottery shop on the edge of town. Arrive into San Miguel where our hotel is right across the street from the square. After lunch on your own, you can explore to your heart’s content or just relax on the square where you are apt to meet one of the many retirees who call San Miguel home. Tonight you will have fun choosing your own little intimate restaurant. Just follow the soft strumming sound of guitars. Overnight at the Posada San Francisco in San Miguel de Allende.

DAY 3 - Board your coach this morning for an all day tour to Guanajuato, known as the subterranean city. At one time, Guanajuato was the richest city in Mexico producing twenty percent of the world’s silver. The alleyways are so narrow that lovers can kiss from opposite balconies. Our visit to the statue of Pipila affords a panoramic view of the city reminding many of cities in Spain. For even a better view, we will ride the teleferico across the city. Downtown, our city tour includes the tree shaded Plaza de Reforma, the Cervantino Museum and the two story colorful market place where the famous Guanajuato pottery can be found. Arrive back about 6:00p.m. Overnight at the Posada de San Francisco in San Miguel de Allende.

NOTE: The tour to Guanajuato is an all day tour and is included but optional...those who wish to spend this day in San Miguel may do so. Please advise your guide if you intend to stay in San Miguel.

DAY 4 - Awaken to the ringing of church bells the singing of the birds on the tree shaded plaza. The day is free to enjoy, relax and hang loose. Explore to your heart’s content or shop and shop and shop. Overnight at the Posada de San Francisco in San Miguel de Allende.

NOTE: Day 3 and Day 4 may be reversed depending on the day of the week.

DAY 5 - Pack up this morning wistfully leaving San Miguel behind. Visit Queretaro with its 250 year old aqueducts and Jo’s favorite spot, the Convent of the Cross, designed by the same Franciscan architect-monk who designed the Alamo in Texas. Time to shop for the famous "opals" of the region before enjoying lunch on one of the tree shaded plazas or at the more modern restaurant on the square. Leave for San Luis Potosi where Jo has a wonderful surprise for you so be on time at 8:00p.m. These musicians will steal your heart away. Overnight at the Hotel Real Plaza in San Luis Potosi.

DAY 6 - Return to the magic Rio Grande Valley through Saltillo and Monterrey. You should arrive at the border around 6:30p.m.
