The Mad Englishman’s Castle & the Fountain of Youth
Tampico - Valles Tour
Tours to Tampico! This tour is fantastic! Great seafood in the tropical port of Tampico on the Gulf of Mexico. Then lush, tropical foliage! Colorful Indian markets! At Hotel Taninul, take time to soak in the hot sulphur pool, sometimes called the Fountain of Youth. Many of our customers have commented that they would like to stay forever in this paradise. Your tour will take you to the bustling port city of Tampico, to the Indian markets of the Huasteca region near Valles and to the capitol city of Cd. Victoria. The scenery will be just as diverse from grain fields to cattle ranches, from cotton fields to avocado and mango orchards. A real kaleidoscope of nature with history and culture an added plus. Come join in for a relaxing and educational four day week-end.
DAY 1 - After leaving the Rio Grande Valley, we travel through a rich sorghum growing area to San Fernando, through cattle raising country to Soto La Marina, then through fields of onions, tomatoes, peppers, and garbanzos into the bustling seaport city of Tampico, where it seems all the world must meet. Our hotel is in the heart of it all - a great place to people watch. Nearby tropical fruit juice stands and a local bakery will tempt all of us. A stroll around the Plaza is most enjoyable. You will probably meet many young people eager to practice their English with you. Overnight at the Hotel Inglaterra in Tampico.
DAY 2 - Tampico, the 12th largest city in Mexico, is geared principally to commerce. Three different ports move petroleum, cement, and general merchandise down the Panuco River to the Gulf and beyond. Visit the recently restored Historical Zone on our city tour which will also include the interesting Chinese Cemetery. Jo will treat you to a special surprise en route to the beach where you can wiggle your toes in the sand. After lunch, cross the Panuco River on the tallest bridge in Mexico for a panoramic view of the Tampico harbor outlined by tall swaying coconut palms. Arrive at our hotel in time to explore the grounds and admire the tropical plants. If you are interested in archeology, there is a very good museum on the grounds of our hotel. Overnight at the Hotel Taninul outside Cd. Valles. B
DAY 3 - Sunday is market day at many nearby Indian villages in the surrounding mountains. Follow the Pan American Highway detouring to Tancanhuitz, where you may see Totonacan Indian women wearing brightly colored headpieces. Interesting sights greet you such as fertile eggs, boiled roots of Spanish daggers and yucca, all types of medicinal herbs, dried beans of all colors and coffee beans both regular and decaf - spread out for your perusal. Near Xilitla, you will visit the gardens of Sir Edward James, the "mad Englishman", who fancied himself an architect. Much of his philosophy is displayed in his gardens and in buildings that have stairways leading to nowhere! Enjoy an included snack on the banks of a peaceful, clear stream. On our return to Valles, a roadside stand will tempt you with orange blossom honey and honey liqueur. Take a dip in the pool before enjoying an included cook-out. Overnight at the Hotel Taninul outside Cd. Valles. B, Picnic Lunch, D DAY 4 - Nobody ever wants to leave this tropical paradise but today we must start home. Perhaps someday you will go back. Travel through sugarcane fields and mango and orange orchards stopping at a roadside stand to purchase home made molasses or piloncillo (brown sugar cones made from the sugar cane juices). On to Ciudad Victoria, state capital of Tamaulipas, for our lunch break. Past man made Lake Guerrero crossing back into the Rio Grande Valley around 6:30p.m. B
