The Mission Trail – Goliad & San Antonio
2 days (1 meals) $219/person
The recorded history of Texas begins in the building of the missions by the Spaniards who were trying to protect our state from invasion by the French moving in from Louisiana. Eventually the defiant Texans, fighting for their independence, took control of the missions. Bloody battles ensued until finally Texas won their independence. The story unfolds into a dramatic story of passionate caring and belligerent, reckless warfare. We’ve woven fun, food and history into a great trip for those who want a real Texas Experience.
DAY 1 – Depart from the Rio Grande Valley which truly has a very brief history of settlement as we travel to more historic areas to begin our history lesson on The Mission Trail. Begin at the Alamo followed by a visit to San Jose Mission and a drive on the Mission Trail. Check into our hotel located right on the banks of the San Antonio River. After partaking of the hotels “kick back” ( Heavy hor d’oerves with three well drinks or sodas) enjoy an included cruise on the river. Overnight at the Drury Plaza in San Antonio. Hor D’oerves
DAY 2 – Remember your childhood as we visit the Institute of Texas Cultures- some of the kitchens from different ethnic groups have old iron cook stoves and iron bedsteads. Arrive for lunch into Goliad with a visit to the Presidio La Bajia, the best preserved Spanish presidio (fort) in the United States. This fortress protected the Mission of Nuestra Senora del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga, still in operation today. In 1835, the Presidio came under the control of the rebellious Texans. Later, when James Fannin became the commander, he renamed the garrison Fort Defiance. You may hear another version of the Goliad Massacre, but whatever version you accept, there is no doubt that the men who lost their lives there became martyrs and gave the Texan forces under the command of General Sam Houston even more desire to gain their independence.
